Why this matters
Microsoft and Google keep their services running, but under the shared responsibility model they do not promise to bring back data your users or an attacker deleted. Retention settings and recycle bins are not a backup.
Ransomware, a departing employee, a sync error or a mistaken bulk delete can remove months of work. Data Protection keeps independent copies and proves, with regular test restores, that they can be recovered.

Common questions
Does Microsoft not back up our data already?
Microsoft keeps the service available and keeps deleted items for a limited time. It is not an independent backup with long retention and point-in-time restore.
Where are backups stored?
In separate cloud storage from your production tenant, in a region agreed with you.
How fast can we get data back?
Single files and mailboxes in minutes. Whole systems depend on size, and the targets are agreed and tested in advance.
